We as a community have to ensure that we own Castleberry Hill and keep it picked up, that means everyday…pick up after your dog, pick up trash around your building and in the empty lot next door to you, get rid of the graffiti on the downspouts and dumpsters…CLEAN IT UP!

D2 City Councilmember Kwanza Hall and D4 representative Marshall Thomas from Cleta Winslows’ office were instrumental in getting things cleaned up this weekend. We had Atlanta Public Works, inmate crews, a street sweeper, dumpster and trash truck and in case you haven’t noticed everything looks great!

On October 5th, Atlanta’s fourth annual night of art + experimentation, returns to the Castleberry Hill Arts District. This year’s event is curated by Helena Reckitt, an internationally respected curator and critic.

FLUX NIGHT 2013

a night of art + experimentation

Call for Proposals

Reckitt’s curatorial theme, Free Association, evokes the pleasure of mixing and mingling at street level that is central to Flux Night, and that car-centric Atlanta does not always afford. It also points to the strong history of digital art and collective activity within the city.

Flux Night 2013 will have two categories of projects: curated projects selected directly by Reckitt and proposed projects selected from an open call for proposals by a committee that will include Reckitt along with Flux Projects staff and board.

Artists may review the call for proposals and submit projects through CaFÉ (Call for Entry, callforentry.org ). details + application

Castleberry Hill is a historic creative neighborhood in [...]

Castleberry Hill is a historic creative neighborhood in Downtown Atlanta located adjacent to and southwest of the Central Business District and GA Dome/GWCC complex. Bordered by MLK Jr. Dr, Spring St, Whitehall and Northside Dr, it is a federally recognized historic district since 1985 and became a City of Atlanta Landmark District, the 8th such designation, in 2006. A designated ‘landmark’ district’ helps preserve the neighborhood from overzealous developers.

This area was originally part of the renegade Snake Nation community but by the Civil War was becoming industrial with terra cotta and other building material factories, cotton warehousing and grocers, one of whom, Daniel Castleberry, it is named for. By the early 1900s it had fallen on hard times where it remained until the 1980s where it was the backdrop for dystopic films such as Freejack and Kalifornia. Additionally, Driving Miss Daisy was filmed in the neighborhood as well as the Farrelly Brothers comedy Hall Pass, The Walking Dead and many Tyler Perry films. Production companies often choose Castleberry Hill as a backdrop due to the historic quality and New York-style loft living. Loft conversions began in the 80s and by 1992 there were 120 lofts with 150 residents, the 1996 Olympics saw another influx of development. The population has grown considerably since then.

Cantina and the Marcia Wood Gallery are here and welcoming guests during the 2nd Friday Art Stroll and most other days. Relatively new additions such as Wine Shoe and Boxcar Grocer have become staples in the neighborhood and residents rely heavily on and help encourage their continued success.

As Atlanta grew after the Civil War from a newly charte [...]

As Atlanta grew after the Civil War from a newly chartered city to a regional rail distribution center, so did Castleberry Hill. The area began as a residential district with Peters Street functioning as a trade and commercial strip supporting adjacent residential areas as well as the railroad-related businesses. As a business center, Peters Street received a boost in 1871 when the first horse-drawn trolley line in Atlanta was routed along it. In 1878, the City Directory lists laborers, clerks, carpenters, saloon keepers, weavers, tailors, grocers, butchers, blacksmiths, cabinet makers and other occupations typical of the pattern of the era of living within walking distance of work. The principal community facilities were the Walker Street School and fire station on the corner of West Fair and Bradberry Streets. A wooden trestle bridge on Nelson Street, likely the first in the city, was the only street in the district over passing the railroad (all other crossings were at grade). Another trolley line crossed this bridge.
